ADA Intensive Evidence-Based Dentistry Workshop

The American Dental Association hosts this hands-on, interactive workshop to help dental clinicians and educators better understand, appraise, and implement new evidence-based dentistry (EBD) treatment and diagnostic options into their practice, curriculum, or research.

To participate, attendees select one of the two streams offered: How to Practice EBD or How to Teach EBD.

Stream #1: How to Practice EBD

Target audience

This course is designed for clinicians looking to build on their EBD knowledge.

Learning objectives

How to Practice EBD is a hands-on learning experience that takes a deep dive into advanced EBD topics, including methods for identifying reliable and unbiased information in an efficient manner.

Topics covered

  • Study design and PICO (population, intervention, comparison, and outcome) question development
  • Searching for evidence to inform clinical decisions
  • Appraising and using articles about therapy, harm, and diagnosis
  • Using systematic reviews and recommendations from clinical practice guidelines

Stream #2: How to Teach EBD

Target audience

This course is designed for educators interested in teaching EBD to others.

Learning objectives

How to Teach EBD focuses on pedagogical best practices for the classroom or clinic, including techniques for building an EBD curriculum and teaching others about the integration of EBD into clinical chairside manner.

Topics covered

  • Small-group learning, including case-based learning and POGIL (process-oriented guided-inquiry learning)
  • Building an EBD curriculum for different clinical disciplines
  • Teaching others how to communicate risk to patients

Course details (both streams)

  • Attendees receive 21 continuing education (CE) credits from the ADA.*
  • Of note for international applicants: The course is offered only in the English language; no simultaneous interpretation is provided.

Workshop faculty for 2017

Headshot of Dr. Elliot AbtElliot Abt, D.D.S., M.S., M.Sc., received his master’s degree in evidence-based health care from the University of Oxford and his dental degree and master’s degree in oral pathology from the University of Illinois. He serves on the Critical Review Panel for the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry and is immediate past-chair of the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. Dr. Abt also teaches oral medicine at the University of Illinois and is on the attending staff at Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Headshot of Dr. Alonso Carrasco LabraAlonso Carrasco-Labra, D.D.S., M.Sc., earned his D.D.S. from the University of Chile and his M.Sc. from McMaster University. He is completing his doctorate in the Health Research Methodology Program at McMaster and currently serving as the director of the ADA’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry. He is an author of 51 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and co-author of two books for practicing evidence-based medicine, including Users’ Guides to the Medical Literature.

Headshot of Rick NiedermanRichard Niederman, D.M.D., M.A., is a professor and chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Health Promotion and director of the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). He graduated magna cum laude from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he also received his periodontal specialty training. He received his evidence-based medicine certificate at the University of Oxford and is the founding U.S. editor of the journal Evidence-Based Dentistry.

Headshot of Silvia SpivakovskySilvia Spivakovsky, D.D.S., is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at NYUCD. She trained in evidence-based dentistry at McMaster University; at the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry in Oxford, England; and at the ADA/Forsyth EBD Course. She contributes regularly to the journal Evidence-Based Dentistry and presented nationally and internationally on the topic of implementation strategies for under- and postgraduates. She chairs the Academy of Distinguished Educators at NYUCD and has integrated evidence-based methodology into clinical and didactic courses since 2009.

Headshot of Dr. Analia Veitz-KeenanAnalia Veitz-Keenan, D.D.S., is a clinical associate professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine at NYUCD. She teaches evidence-based dentistry to under- and postgraduate students, as well as coordinates and teaches EBD activities for faculty. She completed her training in Evidence-Based Practice at McMaster University and at the Centre for Evidence-Based Dentistry in Oxford, England.

Robert Weyant, D.M.D., Dr.P.H., M.P.H., Headshot of Robert Weyantis associate dean of public health and outreach and professor and chair of the Department of Dental Public Health and Information Management at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He is also associate professor of epidemiology in the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Dr. Weyant has been teaching evidence-based dentistry for more than 10 years to dental students and faculty. Dr. Weyant received his M.P.H. and his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Michigan.
